The princess and the commoner

Cuentan que una bella princesa estaba buscando consorte. Aristócratas y adinerados señores habían llegado de todas partes para ofrecer sus maravillosos regalos; joyas, tierras, ejércitos y tronos conformaban los obsequios para conquistar a tan especial criatura.
It is said that a beautiful princess was looking for a consort. Aristocrats and wealthy lords had come from far and wide to offer their wondrous gifts; jewels, lands, armies and thrones made up the gifts to conquer such a special creature.

Entre los candidatos se encontraba un joven plebeyo, que no tenía más riquezas que amor y perseverancia. Cuando le llegó el momento de hablar, le dijo:
Among the candidates was a young commoner, who had no riches but love and perseverance. When the time came for him to speak, he said to her:

– «Princesa, te he amado toda mi vida. Como soy un hombre pobre y no tengo tesoros para darte, te ofrezco mi sacrificio como prueba de amor: estaré cien días sentado bajo tu ventana, sin más alimentos que la lluvia, y sin más ropas que las que llevo puestas.
- "Princess, I have loved you all my life. Since I am a poor man and have no treasures to give you, I offer you my sacrifice as a proof of love: I will sit for a hundred days under your window, with no food but the rain, and no clothes but the ones I am wearing.

Ésa es mi dote».
That is my dowry.

La princesa, conmovida por semejante gesto de amor, decidió aceptar y le dijo al joven plebeyo:
The princess, moved by such a gesture of love, decided to accept and said to the young commoner:

– «Tendrás tu oportunidad: si pasas la prueba, me desposarás».
- "You will have your chance: if you pass the test, you will betroth me".

Así pasaron las horas y los días. El pretendiente estuvo sentado, soportando los vientos, la nieve y las noches heladas. Sin pestañear, con la vista fija en el balcón de su amada, el valiente vasallo siguió firme en su empeño, sin desfallecer un momento.
And so the hours and days passed. The suitor sat, enduring the winds, the snow and the freezing nights. Without blinking, with his eyes fixed on the balcony of his beloved, the brave vassal remained steadfast in his endeavor, without faltering for a moment.

De vez en cuando, la cortina de la ventana real dejaba traslucir la esbelta figura de la princesa, la cual con un noble gesto y una sonrisa, aprobaba la faena. Todo iba a las mil maravillas. Incluso algunos optimistas habían comenzado a planear los festejos.
From time to time, the curtain of the royal window showed the slender figure of the princess, who, with a noble gesture and a smile, approved the task. Everything was going swimmingly. Even some optimists had begun to plan the festivities.

Al llegar el día noventa y nueve, los pobladores de la zona habían salido a animar al próximo monarca. Todo era alegría y jolgorio, hasta que de pronto, cuando faltaba una hora para cumplirse el plazo, ante la mirada atónita de los asistentes y la perplejidad de la infanta, el joven se levantó y sin dar explicación alguna, se alejó lentamente del lugar.
When the ninety-ninth day arrived, the inhabitants of the area had come out to cheer the next monarch. All was joy and merriment, until suddenly, with an hour to go before the deadline, before the astonished gaze of the attendees and the perplexity of the Infanta, the young man got up and without giving any explanation, slowly walked away from the place.

Unas semanas después, mientras deambulaba por un solitario camino, un niño de la comarca alcanzó al joven plebeyo y le preguntó:
A few weeks later, while wandering along a lonely road, a child of the district caught up with the young commoner and asked him:

– «¿Qué fue lo te que ocurrió?, estabas a un paso de lograr la meta. ¿Por qué perdiste esa oportunidad? ¿Por qué te retiraste?».
- "What happened to you, you were one step away from achieving the goal, why did you miss that chance, why did you retreat?".

Con profunda consternación y algunas lágrimas mal disimuladas, el joven plebeyo contestó en voz baja:
With deep dismay and some ill-concealed tears, the young commoner replied in a low voice:

– «No me ahorró ni un día de sufrimiento, ni siquiera una hora. No merecía mi amor».
- "She did not spare me a day of suffering, not even an hour. She did not deserve my love."

Comment:

El merecimiento no siempre es egolatría, sino dignidad.
Deservedness is not always egolatry, but dignity.

Cuando damos lo mejor de nosotros mismos a otra persona, cuando decidimos compartir la vida, cuando abrimos nuestro corazón de par en par y desnudamos el alma hasta el último rincón, cuando perdemos la vergüenza, cuando los secretos dejan de serlo, al menos merecemos comprensión.
When we give the best of ourselves to another person, when we decide to share life, when we open our hearts wide open and bare our souls to the last corner, when we lose our shame, when secrets cease to be secrets, we at least deserve understanding.

Que se menosprecie, ignore o desconozca fríamente el amor que regalamos a manos llenas es desconsideración o, en el mejor de los casos, ligereza. Cuando amamos a alguien que, además de no correspondernos, desprecia nuestro amor y nos hiere, estamos en el lugar equivocado. Esa persona no se hace merecedora del afecto que le prodigamos.
To belittle, ignore or coldly disregard the love we give freely is inconsiderate or, at best, light-hearted. When we love someone who, besides not reciprocating our love, despises our love and hurts us, we are in the wrong place. That person is not worthy of the affection we lavish on him or her.

La situación es clara: si no me siento bien recibido en algún lugar, empaco y me voy.
The situation is clear: if I don't feel welcome somewhere, I pack up and leave.

My comment about this reading:

Es interesante cómo esta historia no solo es aplicable al tema de amor en relaciones de pareja sino efectivamente también al amor en relaciones de amistad y de familia.
It is interesting how this story is not only applicable to the subject of love in couple relationships, but also to love in friendship and family relationships.

Jamás será justo herir y hacer sufrir a quien te ama ni a nadie.
It will never be fair to hurt and make the one who loves you or anyone else suffer.

Y aunque nunca le hayas pedido que se pusiera a prueba ante ti (o sí que lo hiciste de manera disfrazada), esa persona te demostró cuánto le significas (y aún).
And even if you never asked her/him to prove herself/ himself to you (or you did in disguise), that person showed you how much you mean to her/him (and still does).

Además, varios detalles de tu parte ilusionaron a esa persona con el hecho de que realmente habría un sentimiento especial, bonito y recíproco.
In addition, several details on your part made that person hope that there really would be a special, beautiful and reciprocal feeling.

Pero al final, lamentablemente todo fue –al igual que esta historia- como un cuento: lleno de personajes y hechos ficticios.
But in the end, unfortunately everything was - just like this story - like a fairy tale: full of fictitious characters and facts.

¿La finalidad?
The purpose?

¿Divertirte? ¿Te sientes un ser tan privilegiado que hasta puedes tratar a esa persona (incluso a otros) y a sus sentimientos al inhumano estilo de “rata de laboratorio”?
Have fun? Do you feel so privileged that you can even treat that person (even others) and their feelings in the inhumane "lab rat" style?

Sabes, manipulando y jugando con ellos.
You know, manipulating and playing with them.

Por lo que la decepción que siente esa persona que te ama es como una herida abierta y cuyo dolor pareciera que será de por vida.
So the disappointment felt by that person who loves you is like an open wound whose pain seems to be lifelong.

Pero esa persona que te ama sonríe al saber que estás bien.
But that person who loves you smiles knowing you're okay.

Esa persona no te odia. Tampoco guarda algún rencor contra ti.
That person does not hate you. Nor does she/he hold a grudge against you.

Esa persona te ha perdonado aunque aún no te hayas disculpado.
That person has forgiven you even though you have not yet apologized.

Además, ten la seguridad que pese al dolor así como al hecho de haberse retirado de la jugada porque se cansó, esa persona te mantendrá en mente y corazón para bien, y con la esperanza de algún día saber el porqué de tu acción.
In addition, rest assured that despite the pain as well as the fact that she/he withdrew from the game because she/he got tired, that person will keep you in mind and heart for good, and with the hope of someday knowing the reason for your action.

Y cuando ese día llegue, ten también la seguridad de que la persona que te ama no te juzgará ni te reprochará nada y tampoco te expondrá al escarnio público, sino que sentirá tal paz que cicatrizará la herida que le has producido.
And when that day comes, also rest assured that the person who loves you will not judge you or reproach you for anything, nor she/he will expose you to public scorn, but will feel such peace that the wound you have caused her/him will heal.

¿Sabes el porqué?
Do you know why?

Pues, porque eso sí es verdadero amor incondicional.
Well, because that does is true unconditional love.

Sí, así como el amor que deberías sentir por quien proteges y por quien harías cualquier cosa en pro de su bienestar y felicidad; incluso, si eso incluye herir a otra persona quien también haría lo mismo tanto por a quien proteges como por ti.
Yes, as well as the love you should feel for the one you protect and for whom you would do anything for her/his well-being and happiness; even if that includes hurting another person who would also do the same for both you and the person you are protecting.

Ajá, eso también es verdadero amor incondicional.
Aha, also that's true unconditional love.
